The American Athletic Union, also known as the AAU, is a multisport organization. One of the many sports that it promotes is powerlifting, which made a return to the AAU in 1995. Through efforts by the AAU Powerlifting Committee (AAUPC), lifters have the opportunity to compete against lifters from around the world, right here in the United States. This is a drug-tested organization. The AAU has Officers and an Executive Committee for powerlifting. The National Chairman is Bill DePorter, and there are two Vice-Chairmen - Martin Drake and Larry Larsen. You may contact Bill DePorter at: William.De.Porter@udlp.com for more information on AAU Powerlifting. First Things First: The AAU Official Info Source The AAU official website is at: www.aausports.org. Choose the sport of powerlifting from the drop-down menu, or view the powerlifting pages here. My Experiences With The AAU Martin Drake invited me to join the AAU in 2000 and has since kept me updated on news and events. With a personal telephone call, he explained the organization and opportunities, but at the time, I wasn't prepared to travel to the big events on the West Coast. Nevertheless, despite losing contact repeatedly, Martin found me again on message boards and continued to include me in his mailing list, which I appreciated. In 2002, Rickey Dale Crain invited me to be on his Crain's Muscle World Team at the AAU World Bench, Deadlift, and Push-Pull Championships. I began training for this event but because of several changes happening in other areas of my life, including going back to college to finish up my Bachelor's degree, I had to postpone this participation for another year. Finally, in 2003, I was invited to lift at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs at the AAU American Invitational Powerlifting Championships which became known as "The Vision" meet to the participants - the first-ever powerlifting meet held in this facility. This turned out to be my first AAU meet. I placed 2nd in the Women's 97 Open. It was a great and a rare experience, as I was able to meet lifters from all over the nation and from many different federations in one place, lifting under AAU guidelines and united for one day to demonstrate powerlifting to the U.S. Olympic Committee.
