AMERICAN POWERLIFTING ASSOCIATION AND
WORLD POWERLIFTING ALLIANCE
INFORMATION

The American Powerlifting Association, also known as the APA, is a powerlifting organization that has been in existence since 1986. They provide lifters with the opportunity to compete against lifters from around the world, right here in the United States and in Canada, through the international arm of the WPA (World Powerlifting Alliance). They offer both drug-tested and non-tested divisions at meets. In drug-tested divisions at National and World competitions, the APA pays for all drug testing costs. Scott Taylor is the APA Founder and President and the WPA Executive Director.

You may contact the APA by e-mailing President Scott Taylor at: scott@apa-wpa.com or if you live in midwestern state, you can e-mail Roger Broeg, APA Midwest Regional Chairman, at: iowaapachair@apa-wpa.com

My Experiences With The APA

I actually began competing seriously in powerlifting (3-lift) meets in the APA! I was a member in 2003 with my very first "real" (no token lifts) full meet being the APA Midwest Regional Powerlifting Championships in Blue Springs (Kansas City), Missouri (also affectionately known as the "B.S. Meet") in March 2003, directed by Roger Broeg. I followed this up with "B.S. II" - the APA Labor Day Weekend Bash, directed by Rodney Wood and held in the same place in August 2003. In both meets, I set first-time Minnesota and Midwest Regional Records in all 3 lifts and the total in the Women's 97 Open Drug-Tested and Non-Tested Divisions.

Some of the lifters at these two meets were responsible for talking me into switching from benching to powerlifting because I had met them on online training forums first and they had encouraged me to lift at these meets. On such message boards as Weight Trainers United, the APA-WPA forum and the Crain's Muscle World board, helpful lifters encouraged and guided me every step of the way to prepare for these meets and beyond. Most of them were/are APA-WPA members. I would not have ever tried squatting or deadlifting beyond the little numbers I toyed-with back in the old days, and I would not have an Elite total (or any mentionable total, period), had it not been for these lifters.

Looking For Existing APA Minnesota Records?

Believe it or not, although the APA has yet to conduct meets in this state, a handful of powerlifters from Minnesota already hold APA state records. View the current records here.

All other weight classes and divisions have vacant state record slots, waiting to be filled with the best APA lifts in the state!
