I was hired by the City of Edina, Minnesota to work in the Administration Department as their Communications Intern in Oct. 2005. I'm still having fun at City Hall learning a lot on the job and will continue in this capacity until May 2006.

This interesting experience has been a combination of direct exposure to the field of communications and city government. Thus far, it has been a perfect addition to what I have been learning in my Communications Studies major coursework at Northwestern College. The City of Edina's employees and volunteers are an absolutely wonderful, fun-loving and friendly bunch of people to work with.

Here's just a sampling of what I've been doing during this awesome internship:

  • Writing stories and taking photos for About Town Magazine, AboutBusiness and City Slick - official publications for the City of Edina's residents, businesses, City Council and employees
  • Writing press releases for local media and the Internet
  • Assisting City Planning Commission meetings - controlling camera shots for production within the Council Chambers, assisting with set-up of presentations and providing information to audio-visual production crew
  • Updating the content of the official City website at CityOfEdina.com for various departments and facilities
  • Posting and managing announcements on the City outdoor message board
  • Posting official City announcements through CastNet to air on Time Warner Cable 16
  • Attending Minnesota Assocation of Government Communicators workshops
