BREAKING THE 300 DEADLIFT BARRIER
and smashing the 150 bench barrier with a 160...
2004 goals were finally achieved in Reno!

Welcome to the pages dedicated to the sport I have grown to love and learned much about: Powerlifting!

If you are not familiar with what powerlifting involves, it is a strength sport comprised of 3 major lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. People of all ages and - as you can tell - all sizes can compete in this sport and attempt to set or break official or personal records. Just get familiar with the rules of your organization and execute the lifts correctly by training properly. Most of all, enjoy doing it!

MY LATEST NEWS IN POWERLIFTING (as of 11/15/04):

My most recent meet was the WABDL World Bench Press and Deadlift Championships in Reno, Nevada...the farthest west I have ever traveled for a meet. Directed by WABDL President Gus Rethwisch, this was the largest meet in powerlifting history with well over 700 lifters from 13 countries and 40 states, held from Nov. 10th until the 15th. I lifted on Sunday the 14th. This was my first time at any World competition, and I weighed in at 96.4 lbs. I must say that being in the Peppermill Hotel and Casino was nothing short of sensory overload, there were lights, mirrors, lights and more lights... and thank the Lord, the only lights that I got on the stage were white all day on Sunday :)

BENCH PRESS: I won 1st Place. I had competition from the incredibly strong Cosette Neely (formerly Fernandez, the WABDL BP World and National Record Holder in both the 97's and 105's) and was convinced that I was going to have my Lil BB (as Rodney "BB" Wood would call it) handed to me when I saw her opener... a 209.4 (95 kg). No sooner was I able to pick my jaw up off the colorful casino carpeting when I realized that she did not get a lift in and I won as World Champion on the bench in our class. And then in the meantime, all 3 of my lifts flew up, and I had been wondering if my opener was on the too-heavy side, but apparently not!

Gear: Single-Ply Inzer Rage, Titan wrist wraps

1st attempt - 143.3 (65 kg)
2nd - 154.3 (70 kg)
3rd - 160.9 (159.8 plus .5 kg chips... 73 kg) - Minnesota State Record and PR by 12 lbs.

I was told that the 3rd attempt looked easier than any PR bench I had gotten before. I wanted to break the 150 BP barrier before the end of the year and the Lord handed me a 161 :) A huge blessing since my BP has not moved for over a year!

DEADLIFT: I won 1st Place here too. My main competition has been Sandra Stowers (see my IMAGES page from this meet, she is beautiful!)...this year, she broke my National record, then I took it back... and she was there at the meet (in fact the first person to nearly knock me over with a big hug after I got my last attempt) but she had lifted in the Masters division and not the Open. She pulled 266.7 lbs. The great deadlifter Carmela Baqui was also scheduled to pull in the 97's on Team Hawaii but only in the Submasters division where she pulled 209.2 lbs. Therefore, both Sandra and Carmela had lifted on a previous day during this week of competition, in their respective divisions, and did not compete against me in the Women's Open.

Gear: Single-ply CMW Genesis DL Suit, Titan wrist wraps

1st attempt - 259 (117.5 kg)
2nd - 281 (127.5 kg)
3rd - 303 (137.5 kg) - National and Minnesota State Records and PR by 11 lbs.

That 3rd attempt just about killed me, and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I got into my suit and warmed up way too early and was waiting/standing around until the action started... sometime between 5 and 6pm I think (can't tell the time of day at the Peppermill, lol). Also benching earlier in the day and then the gap of time before pulling had probably slowed me down. But all that hard training really paid off, as this one was the mother of all slow and hard-fought pulls! I really thought I was going to mess this pull up but realized I did not come out here for that so I kept it going until I either failed or something snapped. I had never seen nor heard so many people in the crowd and they were all yelling... it was unreal. I had never been congratulated by so many smiling faces, especially female lifters and specators! Neal asked me if I wanted to go for a 4th and attempt 308... I asked him if he wanted to see me puke. LOL! "I AM DONE FOR THE YEAR... thank you..."

I met and saw lifters from nations like Finland, Brazil, France, Vietnam and states I had never met anybody from before, including the very warm and encouraging Team Hawaii who gave me valuable advice on adjusting BP shirts. Very supportive and happy bunch of competitors... it was nothing short of a blast (and the story about visiting Lake Tahoe and driving through the Sierra Nevadas is for another day :)

The grand finale' of all my attempts at World's...a 303 lb. deadlift for my 3rd attempt, breaking the former WABDL National and Minnesota state record once again, this time by 11 lbs. Can anybody say "CROWD SUPPORT?" What a RRRRUUUUSSSSHH!!!

Highlights from WABDL World's:

World Bench Press Champion - 97 lb. Open

World Deadlift Champion - 97 lb. Open

New Minnesota State and personal record 160.9 lb. bench press

New National, Minnesota State and personal record 303.1 lb. deadlift

...and this was my first World meet!
